Jack Gavin and myself put in some crazy effort this week to locate some Muskies. With only a few hours offered before we had to work the following evening or morning, we did our best to catch some fish. You don't need a full weekend or even a full day off to catch fish, just a few hours before or after work can pay big dividends. We fished Lake Minnetonka the last few days and were able to have some success even with the fishing was slow. We were able to boat these 2 nice Muskies, both being caught on bucktails. The water temps are extremely high right now with this hot weather we are experiencing. This is a great time of the year to be out on the lake, the mid lake structures are now starting to produce fish which will make the rest of the summer hopefully a productive one!
It was a long winter, and wait for the Muskie season, but it is finally upon us. My good Friend Jack Gavin and myself headed up to the V on Friday night and arrived at the cabin around 10 that night. We made some lunches for opening day knowing it was going to be a full day out on the water. The weather was hot and mostly sunny with a few clouds on Sunday afternoon. Overall, the fishing was considered pretty solid in our eyes. It was our first time fishing up the this early in a Muskie season so we did not know what to expect. We located fish right away and were able to make patterns for the remainder of the weekend. Topwater baits seemed to be the best option for us as it produced many follows and a few strikes. The water temps were in the low 60s in the mornings but heated up to around 66 by the afternoons. The lake seems pretty "far along" as far as timing of weeds and water temps. When it was all said and done on Sunday night, we had put in two LONG days on the water. Sun up to sun down for two days gave us 28 hours of time on the water for the weekend. We raised 16 fish, one of which was right on the magical number of 50 inches. Jack was able to boat this nice 44 incher on Saturday morning, it was a great strike, and a pretty good net job by myself ;) I am looking forward to a great season, and I will continue to post reports, photos, and stories for the remainder of the year.
